Ballerina buns
With the popularity of the film Black Swan that were shown in the cinemas all over the world a few months back, it is fair to say that ballet is having a bit of a fashion moment. From ballet inspired fashion (expect to see lots of wrap cardigans and midi skirts in the shops) to hair and makeup, ballet is a popular trend at the moment.
As such, if there is one trend that is massively popular at the moment it has to be the ballet bun. Seen on the catwalks of Nina Ricci, Proenza Schouler and Gucci, the ballerina bun is a really versatile and easy to do up do. From messy side chignons to a more traditional look, or even a twist at the back of the head, the look was popular on the runways.
Not only that, it is also a style favourite with a lot of A-list actresses including Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst, Rachel McAdams, Christina Hendricks and Jennifer Lopez, all taking their inspiration from Black Swan, and opting for sleek ballet inspired hair styles on the red carpet.
It is also really versatile, as you can go for a messy updo, especially good if your hair is curly and wavy, or a sleek chic look. You can also choose where you style your bun – whether it is a stylish knot on the back of the head like Rachel McAdams, at top knot like Kirsten Dunst or a sexy side chignon, a la Christina Hendricks.
The first thing you need to do is choose your style based on your hair type, as curly or wavy hair would work best in a messy style bun whereas straight types can opt for sleek and smooth. Also think about the occasion, as a night out and a friend’s wedding will see your hair styled very differently.
All you need to do to achieve the perfect bun is to start by gathering your hair into a ponytail placing the band where you want the bun to be and twist it round itself before pinning into place. If you are going for a sleek bun look it is a good idea to run your ghd hair straighteners through your hair first so that the look is ultra-sleek and smooth.
