BEST FOOT FORWARD: Catherine O’Sullivan auditions at Wellington Town Hall.
Catherine O’Sullivan strutted her stuff in Wellington Town Hall, where more than 200 hopefuls took the first tentative dance steps that could see them appear on stage wearing out-of-this-world garments at the World of Wearableart Awards.
Miss O’Sullivan, 26, said her nerves were jumpy but she drew on her experience as a dancer with the Southern Ballet Company, in Christchurch, to settle herself ahead of the audition for WOW models and dancers.
“I was a fulltime dancer and I did a lot of shows when I was with the company.”
Experience modelling for well-known Christchurch costume and fabric artist Jenny Gillies also paid off, with Miss O’Sullivan one of about 60 who made the cut.
A second audition next month would see the number culled to 25.
Artistic director Malia Johnston said it was the highest audition standard ever for WOW.
“It is more than just modelling. It is performance modelling. Some of the garments are really beautiful, some are heavy, and some of them require character. So we look for people who can achieve all these things.”
Those who make the final cut can expect a gruelling schedule of rehearsals ahead of the Brancott-Estate-sponsored WOW shows starting in August.
