The human desire to ornament the body is ancient, thousands of years old: altered shells from Morocco up to 82,000 years old, 75,000-year-old ones from South Africa and shells from Israel and Algeria altered approximately 90,000 years ago have been interpreted as purposeful ornamentation by scholars. This week’s highlighted blogs celebrate beauty and accessories with a milliner’s blog and two jewelry sites, each with its own distinct point of view.

1. Serena Lindeman Millinery

Since the royal wedding, it seems like hats have been making a style comeback, so what better blog to visit than one that is dedicated to the art of millinery? On the website www.serenalindeman.com.au, designer Serena“promote[s] and sell[s] her millinery,” so her blog has other purposes: namely, “to discuss creativity, the work of my students and my special clients.”

Recent blog posts mention the silk roses she made for a bride’s wedding and a happy customer over 300 miles away. “Because I love my work and enjoy the pieces I make,” says Serena, “I want to share that with interested readers.” Interconnectivity through blogging is important: “I have met some real enthusiasts through the blog and I am able to promote others though following other blogs allowing me to really focus on my particular interests.

2. Broesvitrine

Jewelry designer Broes has opinions about her craft – “especially art-jewelry… The things I notice about the jewelry may well speak to more people.” So Broesvitrine-blog was born, both to share a love of jewelry and to act as an outlet for her interest in jewelry for adults too (Broes’s website www.broesvi.com showcases children’s jewelry).

Today, says Broes, it has expanded beyond its original purpose and “now is a means of sharing anything I find beautiful, whether it is online or real, very brief or long-lasting, accidental or carefully planned.“ Get excited about beauty with this blog.

3. Lobster Lus Art, Antiques and Jewelry

Mary Lu Wason can transform copper, stone, wire and shells into lovely, whimsical jewelry pieces that are admittedly more interesting than pretty – her collections follow adventurous themes with names like “Pirate Tides,” “Bones of the Sea,” and “Wonderland.”

She offers jewelry on her website and on Etsy, and on the blog she connects more personally to customers and friends, “[sharing] pictures of beach finds or museum trips that inspire (and sometimes become a part of) my jewelry.” Besides chronicling images of inspiration, the blog allows Mary Lu to “show the process of creation from a design sketch to polished piece.”

Mary Lu believes in the importance of the personal touch. “I hope my blog recreates the experience of meeting my customers face to face at a show or in a shop,” she says, “I want them to have a sense of where the jewelry comes from. Its not made in a factory.
